Title: From Past Robotic Software Engineering Research to the Future in the Age of AI
Date & Time: Wednesday, May 20, 2 PM
Venue: A402

Abstract
This talk presents a reflection on the evolution of the speaker's robotic software engineering research and discusses emerging directions shaped by the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Drawing from years of research on software engineering for robotic systems, the presentation revisits fundamental challenges in the development of ROS-based applications, including software quality, technical debt, maintainability, and energy efficiency (one of the main expertise of the researcher). The talk highlights how the widespread adoption of the Robot Operating System (ROS) enabled unprecedented collaboration and reuse in robotics, and how this community can remain relevant and keep making good and reliable software with the use of AI.

Speaker Bio
Michel Albonico is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), in Vejle, and a researcher in software engineering for robotic and cyber-physical systems, especially robotics. His research focuses on Robot Operating System (ROS)-based software engineering, software quality, technical debt, sustainability, and energy-efficient robotics. He leads research initiatives investigating how Artificial Intelligence, more specifically Large Language Models (LLMs) and Agentic AI can support the development, analysis, and optimization of robotic software systems. Michel has a large international research experience that includes the US, Brazil and Europe.
