Title: Generative AI and Diversity
Date & Time: Friday, November 6, 2 PM
Venue: B206

Abstract

As generative AI systems have become increasingly powerful and widely deployed around the world, concerns have also grown about their appropriateness for diverse groups of users. A model that is highly capable but systematically reflects a narrow cultural perspective may not provide equitable or appropriate assistance to users from different cultural backgrounds.

Our work has focused on such limitations, which are not adequately captured by conventional accuracy benchmarks. We address culturally aware image captioning, culturally aware text-to-image generation, multicultural dialogue generation, and the evaluation of cultural bias in generative AI. Our work on CIC: Culturally-aware Image Captioning investigates equitable cultural representation in image captioning. Other projects, including Culture-TRIP, explore culturally aware text-to-image generation through iterative prompt refinement, while NormGenesis addresses multicultural dialogue generation through social-norm modeling and violation recovery. We conclude by discussing further challenges and opportunities for future research.
