About SUNY Korea

SUNY Korea is a SUNY-affiliated campus located at the Incheon Global Campus (IGC) in Incheon, South Korea. IGC hosts a diverse academic community, including SUNY Korea, the University of Utah, George Mason University, Ghent University, and a Stanford University research center, with further expansions planned. SUNY Korea offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs from Stony Brook University (SBU) in Long Island, New York, and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. SBU programs include Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Technology and Society, and Business Management, while FIT programs focus on Fashion Business Management and Fashion Design. About the Department of Computer Science at SUNY Korea

As one of the most active research departments at SUNY Korea, the Computer Science Department offers BS, MS, and PhD programs, along with a newly launched MS in Data Science developed in collaboration with the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET accredits the BS in computer science. The department’s faculty are dedicated to advancing research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, programming languages, wireless networking, IoT and cybersecurity. Students gain hands-on experience through a curriculum that balances theoretical foundations with practical applications, preparing them to meet the demands of a global tech industry. The Role of Department Chair

Reporting directly to the Provost, the Chair will provide strategic leadership for the department, championing innovation and excellence in research and education. This role is ideal for a collaborative leader passionate about advancing computer science education and research within a global academic environment. The Chair will manage and inspire a talented faculty, oversee departmental resources, advance the department’s growth, and strengthen relationships with external stakeholders, including industry and funding partners. The chair will also partner with Stony Brook University to enhance its academic and research programs.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Visionary Leadership: Develop and promote a forward-looking vision for departmental growth and fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.
  • Strategic Engagement: Strengthen relationships with industry, government, and academic partners to enhance research impact and funding opportunities.
  • Academic Excellence: Foster, advocate, and promote cutting-edge, innovative undergraduate and graduate curricula in partnership with Stony Brook University. Drive student recruitment, including international recruitment, accreditation, curricular assessment and advancement, and retention efforts, ensuring SUNY Korea’s reputation as a leader in computer science education in Asia.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion across the department, creating an engaging and supportive environment for all students, faculty, and staff.

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, preferably from a U.S.-based institution.
  • A distinguished teaching, research, and scholarship record, preferably in a U.S.-based institution.
  • Demonstrated academic leadership experience and a commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty, students, and staff.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with industry partners, funding agencies, donors, and alumni.
  • A record of successful administrative experience managing personnel, budgets, and operations in an academic setting is preferred but not required.
